Samantha, a cheerful freelance journalist, and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast -- only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer, a pompous 1700's Militiaman, a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens and an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.

Critics Consensus

Ghosts could stand to ask more of its characters, but an excellent ensemble and a genial wit make for easy, softly spooky viewing.

Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Anita Singh Daily Telegraph (UK) It’s an appealing set-up, but after the first episode things go a bit flat. Rated: 3/5 Nov 21, 2022 Full Review Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kelly Lawler USA Today A surprisingly chipper comedy about being dead... Sep 30, 2022 Full Review Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Allison Keene Paste Magazine The charming CBS series is not quite as cozy as the UK’s version, and features a few unfortunate hallmarks of American sitcom formatting that can feel heavy-handed, but when it hits, it really hits. Mar 22, 2022 Full Review Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) The series starts with a solid center because of the work by McIver. It gets better with each of the spirited characters who bring a different kind of humor to each episode. Rated: A Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) The subtlety of the original suffers, but this is still a promising comedy for the whole family. Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2022 Full Review Ghosts: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Carla Monfort Espinof It isn't revolutionary and could be a little bolder, but it succeeds as a "happy place," leaving you satisfied. Mona R LOVE this show! Never a dull moment. Proud to have three of the actors from Maryland, two of whom went to high school 10 minutes from where we live. I cannot wait for season 4 to begin. :) Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review D L Love this show- witty, entertaining, great characters. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Tara Y Very cute and funny show! It's a really lighthearted comedy that makes it something to look forward to watching each week. The characters are very endearing their writing is quick and witty. We tried to watch the British version as well, but couldn't make it through the first season. The characters writing was extraordinarily boring and off-putting. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review B E Having watched the BBC version through several times, until the American version was announced, I have to say, the BBC version was dull. The storyline was brilliant, but the dialogue was trash, and the only actor on the set was better. With one exception, Lawrence Rickard, or Robin. He was genius. He made Robin come to life as a Cro-Magnon struggling to fit into a changing world. That man is brilliant. He is the only reason I slogged through five seasons of the BBC version. The US version is far funnier, the acting is superior, the dialogue is engaging, and the mini- plots suck you in. Contrary to what others say about the BBC version vs the US version, we have our own cultural tastes and styles. The British are dry, and come off as feckless to an American viewer who appreciates the sarcasm, and wit. Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character, Jay, is far more involved in the series, and flat out acts Kiell Smith-Bynoe, who plays the part poorly snd conveys Mike as a just dull, and uninspiring clod. Utkarsh brings Jay/Mike to life. He is relatable. I have turned at least 14 people onto the American version of the TV show and they love it. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review James V Very hard to watch this horribly acted reboot of a British masterpiece Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Ashley C The BBC version is so much better. The acting is so cringey on this version. The character development is lacking and all of the writing couldn't be more cheesy. I'm appalled they couldn't do better.
