Paying Your Bill

Notice: Before enrolling at SFA, contact SFA's Veterans Resource Center to discuss tuition assistance.

The maximum amount paid for military tuition assistance is 100% of tuition and fees not to exceed $250 per semester credit hour with a limit of $4,500 per fiscal year.

Determining eligibility for military tuition assistance is course-specific. SFA's official start and end dates are used for each course to determine eligibility.

Enrollment status changes

Students who receive military tuition assistance are expected to remain enrolled in their courses for the duration of the term for which the assistance is received. A change in your enrollment status, including dropping a course or withdrawal from the university, may result in a reduction or cancellation of financial assistance.

Military tuition assistance follows different requirements from other financial assistance. Full details regarding loans, scholarships, grants and other aid are available on the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship's enrollment, attendance and withdrawal policy webpage.

Returning of unearned funds

If a recipient drops a course or withdraws from the university prior to completing at least 60% of the term, U.S. Department of Defense regulations require SFA to return unearned tuition assistance funds through at least 60% of the semester per course on a prorated basis.

Tuition assistance funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, and unearned funds are returned based on when the recipient drops or withdraws.

SFA will return all tuition assistance funds on all applicable courses if:

  • the recipient does not begin attendance at SFA
  • the recipient does not start a course receiving tuition assistance, regardless of whether they start other courses
  • the course is dropped prior to the semester's official census date
  • or the course section is canceled by SFA.

A prorated amount of tuition assistance funds is returned if:

  • the recipient drops a course after the official census date
  • or withdraws from the university by following proper procedures.

Visit the Office of the Registrar's how to drop or withdraw webpage for instructions on completing these enrollment changes. The date of your drop or withdrawal will be used as the last date of attendance.

Once the last date of attendance has been determined, Student Business Services will recalculate your tuition assistance eligibility. Recipients must complete at least 60% of the semester for courses receiving tuition assistance. Once the student has completed 60% or more of the semester, the tuition assistance is considered earned and no funds will be returned to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Calculating unearned funds

Using SFA's official class-day number (not just the days a specific class meets), Student Business Services divides the number of calendar days completed by the total number of calendar days in the part of term.

Any holiday breaks of five days or longer will be removed from the equation.

If the resulting percentage is less than 60%, it will be multiplied by the total number of tuition assistance funds applicable to the course to determine the amount of earned tuition. Any funds exceeding this amount will be returned to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Example:

  • Scenario:
    • A student is receiving $750 in military tuition assistance for a three-semester-credit-hour course.
    • They drop the course 20 days after the start of a 100-day term.
  • Calculating proration:
    1. 20 days divided by 100 days equals 0.20
      • The student completed 20% of the term in that specific course.
    2. 0.20 multiplied by $750 funds equals $150 of earned tuition assistance
    3. $750 funds minus $150 earned tuition assistance equals $600 of unearned tuition assistance.
  • Therefore: $600 will be returned to the U.S. Department of Defense and the student must pay this amount back to SFA.

Repaying funds

Funds returned to the U.S. Department of Defense may result in a balance due to SFA. You're responsible for reimbursing SFA for any funds returned by the university on your behalf and will be notified of the amount by Student Business Services. Balances must be paid through Student Business Services.

Exception

If you drop or withdraw due to a military service obligation, SFA will work with you to identify solutions that will not result in a student debt for the returned tuition assistance portion.
